Any business dealing in food — manufacturing, processing, distributing, or selling — must be registered or licensed under FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India). Basic Registration applies to the smallest food businesses, while State and Central licences cover larger operations. Operating a food business without FSSAI registration is a punishable offence under the FSS Act, 2006. The FSSAI registration number (14-digit) must be displayed prominently at the business premises and on all food packaging.
